GDPR Glossary

What is Explicit consent?

A higher standard of consent — an express statement — required to process special-category data or for certain transfers.

Explicit consent goes beyond ordinary unambiguous consent: it requires an express statement of agreement, such as a signed form or a clearly worded opt-in referring to the specific processing.

It is required where the risk is higher — for example processing special-category (sensitive) data, certain automated decisions, or some international transfers.
